I have decided to resign from a wonderful and fulfilling dream career of twenty-nine years and start a new adventure. Twenty-nine years of steady paychecks. Twenty-nine years of stability and success. Twenty-nine years of living life on the edge while also living a life of tremendous fulfillment. Twenty-nine years of massive transition as the world has undergone a technological and cultural upheaval.
I somehow sense that it is time for me to gaze through a global artistic lens rather than simply squinting through a local one.
A wise man told me a few weeks ago that it will be much more difficult in the next few days and years to decide what I am NOT going to do. He said deciding what I will do, will be much easier.
So, as of June 1, 2006, I am NOT doing the following:
I am NOT retiring.
I plan to devote considerable time to my upstart and highly successful Internet company (www.seekersolutions.com). My company needs more of me. It provides a global opportunity to impact artists and educators. I am also in the process of finishing my first book, “Stuck In A Moment?” (How To Get Out Of It) and I have two more books burning to be written.I plan to consult and speak about creative and artistic subjects. I will paint more watercolors, travel more, and continue to develop and mentor artists. I also plan to trademark and expand the annual “re:create” (www.recreateconference.com) conference/think-tank that my wife Chris and I started six years ago from one to several conferences around the U.S. and possibly the world. My daughter Paige and I are also in the preliminary stages of launching a new weekly webmagazine which will be sponsored by Seeker Solutions and Radiate Films. Our plans call for a premiere in February at Google Video. And I’m sure that is not all…
I am NOT moving.
Chris and I love the historic community of Franklin and we love our faith community. Chris has found a career in real estate that utilizes her gifts to the max and in which she finds deep fulfillment. Our two wonderful daughters have found a home here. I plan to continue to volunteer as an artist occasionally as needed at The People’s Church and have lunch some days at Chop House and golf days at Legends with Pastor Rick. You will probably see me at Starbucks, Merridees, or The Merc. Hmmmm.
I am NOT quitting.
I plan to focus globally. I have an open invitation to speak at universities about the arts and free enterprise in the country of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. I also have an opportunity to partner with my friend Billy Patterson to develop an artist initiative for college students in the cultural center of Rome, Italy. We already have planned trips to Australia, Colorado, and St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. this year. I plan to continue to dream, develop and execute new ideas. I have a wonderful advisory board to guide me as I take this leap of faith on June 1. I have formed a great group of nine men called “In Veritas” that meet once a month who are creatives and writers (many of whom are quite well-known) who plan to function much like “The Inklings” group that met in Oxford, England and was composed of men like C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. I also plan to continue the artist mentoring group that I have led each Tuesday morning for the past four years. And….well, you get the picture.
I love this beautiful piece of writing…"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.
