Tuscany Day I...
Slept in until 11:30 am. Rome and Florence will tire you out.
Then to a culinary delight at Fonteruoli Ristorante and on to a tour of their very ancient winery and cellars. Then a delightful tasting of their wines. Nice. Italian wines are growing on me. Chianti Classico which is our Sangiovese is much different here than in my past experience. These wines are rich and complex. Full of taste and waiting to surprise.
Later, a winding narrow road through the Chainti vineyards to San Gimignano. We arrived just before sunset as the tour groups left and gave the city to us. San Gimignano is indeed touristy-but-it is a stunning example of a Tuscan hilltop fortress. Over thirty towers still remaining from the original seventy.
A wonderful meal at Il Pino, then as we walked through the medieval streets, the sound of a flute echoed about the walls and we found ourselves sitting on the steps of the Duomo listening to a magical concert with the towers guarding over us.
Then Gelato-the best chocolate yet...and home to our castle room at Tenuta Ricavo that is over 1,000 years old...
