If You Did Not Know How Old You Are, How Old Would You Be?
As I approach a milestone birthday, I can't help but contemplate this question posed by the timeless Satchel Paige.
It is estimated that Leroy "Satchel" Paige was born on July 7, 1905. The mere idea that his birthday is an estimate provides perfect evidence to the mystery that was Satchel Paige. In 1965, 60 years after Paige's supposed birthday, he took the mound for the last time, throwing three shutout innings for the Kansas City Athletics.
Joe DiMaggio called Satchel Paige "the best and fastest pitcher I've ever faced". His pitching was amazing and his showboating was legendary.
I would be age sixteen. Magic. Moments. At the age of 16 the world opened up to me. My dad handed me the keys to my first car, a purple 1963 Pontiac Tempest Station Wagon. It was a "lovely" car. Google it. Freedom. Sweet freedom. I did things in that car that will never be known. Independence. Adventure. Dare I say drag racing? I dare not say more. What happens in Pontiac, stays in Pontiac.
How old would you be? Tell me. I dare you.
