WCW- Pet Peeve Expressions
Strunk and White in The Elements Of Style write that an expression sometimes merely enjoys a vogue, much as an article of apparel does. Have you noticed some of the "in vogue" words lately? I first encountered the enthusiastic "Absolutely!" at Starbucks and Cheesecake Factory. Other recent terms include, "There You Go", "Anyway", or "Anyways", "I Mean" and the Aussie "No Worries".
But the expressions that cause me to grit my teeth in agony include "Each and Every One" (Strunk and White call this term pitchman's jargon), the word "Like" inserted after every other word, and the word "Lost" used for someone who is not an evangelical Christian. The word "Anyway" as a crutch phrase after a pause in conversation also causes extreme pain in my lower regions.
A very special giveaway is coming any week now. To win, keep joining us 'round the watercooler.
