WCW - What Is Church Anyway?
As I write this post, I am basking in the afterglow of our monthly writers night. In Vino Veritas is a wordsmiths group in the spirit of author C.S. Lewis and the Inklings. Composed of eleven scribes of the male persuasion from ages 34-74, we gather the first Tuesday of each month to read our latest manuscripts and deliver spirited dialogue about content and writing style.
Amid clouds of cigar and pipe smoke and with the obligatory vino, we set aside a few hours to reflect, encourage, ruminate and laugh. Sometimes even a tear may well up, although we probably wouldn't admit it.
Last night featured a poetic portrayal of what it means to be one with an other and stories about intimacy, Native Americans and the year 1946. The evening also included a Hardy Boys parody and a southern story about hogs getting loose told in dialect.
As we said our rowdy goodbyes, it occurred to me that this evening was more like "church" than the best worship service I had ever attended. It was a gathering not forsaken. A group of very intellectual and passionate men who are concerned with beauty as much if not more than ideology.
The evening was magic. Full of wonder and glory. And I believe that God was glorified. Now that, my brothers and sisters, is church!
